The Associated Press reports ’s sendoff in Cleveland, Ohio on Friday (November 17) was tearful — and exuberant. “When I came here, I expected to mourn,” told thousands of fans who filled most of Public Hall for Friday’s three-hour memorial service for Levert, who died Nov. 10. Gerald Levert Won’t Be Charged With Assault

Billboard.com reports that will not face assault charges for his confrontation with police in Cleveland on Friday. Prosecutor Anthony Jordan said that there was no evidence the singer caused serious physical harm to patrolmen Ronald W. Ross and Daniel Lentz.

Neo-Soul Talk Annoys Gerald Levert

The less-flashy has often struggled to earn the attention of neo-soul artists such as Maxwell and Erykah Badu, despite the similarities in their sounds, and he commented on the situation in an interview with Dan Leroy of The Cleveland Scene. “Neo-soul, to me, is just people who got dreadlocks and African garb, and don’t wear no shoes,” Levert said with a hint of annoyance creeping into his good-natured tone. “They makin’ good records, but at the end of the day, they still gonna be in the R&B section with all the other black folks.” The full story at clevescene.com has since been removed.
