Aaliyah Is Not And Was Not Princess Of Hip Hop

Contributed Anonymously:

I feel that some of you people that are up here are just giving props because she is dead. I loved too but I’m not going to hype her talent, the girl could NOT sing and as far as dancing she was very limited. In fact she didn’t even dance much in her videos, and you can’t really compliment her voice because she didn’t have that many live performances. Not to mention she couldn’t take any credit for her music, she didn’t write produce or anything on her songs. You people talk about Ciara being unoriginal, then what was . She was a carbon copy of Janet Jackson. Ciara is more original than any female artist out right now. She can do more than the regular booty popping, girl can actually pop and lock, and everything. She’s writing her own music and singing about real stuff people can relate to.

You’re obviously a hater. We’re not giving her props because she is dead. We’ve been giving her props before that. Ciara, I’m a fan I like her but she tries to pull off the Aaliyah look, not when she first came out, but later in her career so no, she’s not original. Ciara is DRAG. And so is that girl they’re trying to cast as Aaliyah or already have. Ew! She’s DRAG, she cant sing, dance, or act. And she’s a hoe. NOT RIGHT!

  2. TJ says:

I hate to tell who ever wrote this Aaliyah danced in almost all her videos, and when Ciara came out she was introduces to the world as a mix of Janet and Aaliyah, according to Jazzy P. (the man who discovered her). Aaliyah was under rated when it came down to Brandy and Monica, but Aaliyah had Grammy Nods and her 2 movies were huge, so stop hating and give props to all of them.

  3. fets kashaya says:

I loved Aaliyah all the negative comments about her are just tedious. She had natural talent and beauty. If she were alive she would be at large to this very day.

    YOU ARE JUST A HATER!
AALIYAH WAS THE BEST, SHE COULD SING, ACT, DANCE, AND MODEL. THE PERSON WHO EVER WROTE THIS IS A HUGE HATER, AND PROBABLY IS UGLY AS HECK! CIARA IS OKAY! CIARA TRIES TO ACT LIKE AALIYAH AND NEVER CAME CLOSE BECAUSE (NO OFFENSE) CIARA LOOKS LIKE SHE HAS MANLY STRUCTURES. EVERYBODY LOVED AALIYAH WHEN SHE WAS STILL ALIVE. SO SHUT UP YOU AALIYAH HATER, AND GO KICK ROCKS.

  5. leslie says:

Actually, Aaliyah could sing-FACT she kept her voice soft yet beautiful in her recorded tracks but in most of her live videos she showcased her talent. BTW she could dance too she, she danced in most of her videos. Here’s a list.

  6. ^_~ says:

Are you tone deaf and blind Aaliyah could sing and dance and was a amazing actress and Ciara is just an Aaliyah wannabe she’ll never be better then the original. And don’t have me mention Beyonce over here lying about writing songs I’m sorry but your gonna have to come better than that.

  7. jazzy says:

Aaliyah was the most talented singer there ever was. Her voice was beautiful. I love to see her dance. She was humble and beautiful. She can act and model. People adored Aaliyah because she was different and original. Everyone love to hear her more than some artists today. She Is The Princess of R&B get it to y’all heads. Stop Hating On My Girl AALIYAH!!!!! RIP Babygurl.

  8. Diva says:

How dare you compare Ciara to Aaliyah, when you sit back and compare the 90’s R&B music and now you can tell a whole lot of difference. Aaliyah had a way of experience her songs she actually loved what she does best and that was music and dance. Most of her dance moves was good. Ciara looks at Aaliyah as a role model. But if Aaliyah was alive today I think people would not recognized Ciara, Beyonce and the rest. I mean I love Ciara but don’t ever compare them. People are not acknowledging her because shes dead, its because she was one of the best and her music will forever live in our hearts.

  9. Ju says:

WOW!!!!!! You are definitely a super hater….Aaliyah incorporated her style in fashion and looks… She did that…she incorporated her own dance with Fatima…you just a hater..not evening gone argue..and 1 more thing Ciara is good I like her..but she jocks Aaliyah style especially in the early beginning of her career to the middle of it..and people were calling Aaliyah the princess of R&B..go on YouTube and type of Aaliyah and MTV talk…and you said she couldn’t sing…wow!!! your a lost soul…Aaliyah had mad songs were she showed her vocals.. Especially “The One I Gave My Heart To” and “Giving Up”..looks those up and tell me she couldn’t sing… R.I.P Aaliyah 1979-2001

  10. t says:

Aaliyah could sing and was very talented, so is Ciara. As far as Aaliyah copying Janet PLEASE Aaliyah had swag don’t get me wrong Janet and Aaliyah are my favorite entertainers of all time nobody can touch them. But Aaliyah was different she had style she was beautiful and you need to look up her performance at the Oscars before you say she couldn’t sing hater.

  11. Beelah says:

Sorry, kiddos….I saw some of the YouTube videos too, *sigh* and yup, Aaliyah could not hold a note in a cup. BUT, she was absolutely and positively talented in the modeling, dancing and acting pool. That girl could most definitely dance her behind off!! She also did an amazing job in all of her acting roles, from the first to the last one. She just could not sing live. And, she was downright stunningly beautiful….inside and out. Now if anyone is hating, they really need to back up, because that is not what this is about. Her voice just was not strong (good?) as she portrayed it on them CDs. And, her sad, untimely death and leaving us way too soon is not going to change that. (Much as Beyanka gets on my nerves, that child can sing, guys. She has done it over and over, time and time again LIVE.) Now, Aaliyah may have grown later (hint, hint: Mary J. Blige), fate just did not give her a chance to. Janet, Brittany, and even Mariah is starting to (have already??) fade because they rely too much on “studio vocals.” Unfortunately, it seems like BabyGirl did too. However, luckily talented and blessed as she was, Aaliyah had OTHER careers to fall back on…..unlike Janet. And though I sing all of Miss Jackson’s OLD cuts front to back, Janet cannot even act a fool right.

  12. Rodney says:

Fu** you!!how dare you hate on Aaliyah..She stayed true to her style and was very talented!Charismatic, beautiful, mysterious, relatable, and incredible swagger! Her unique style will never be duplicated! As for dancing…she danced in almost all of her videos…you have no clue what talent is…obviously!!

  13. nicholee says:

How dare you even disrespect Princess Aaliyah! She’s dead let the girl
Rest in peace! No one is giving her props just because she’s dead! Aaliyah
Was original! She did her own things && that’s why we give her props!
You must be stupid because Aaliyah danced in almost all of her videos
if you would listen to something other than fake ass Beyonce && stop watch
In her shake her ass everywhere you would know! Aaliyah was just starting
Her career who knows what she would have become! But from where
Her Career was when she did she was thee PRINCESS OF URBAN POP
&& RNB so please let her rest in peace.

    WE LOVE YoU BABY GIRL!

  14. TKW says:

@ TJ I can see that you are young or you did not follow Aaliyah when she was here. The reason why I say that is because I was around and Aaliyah did not start showing us her dancing skills until she was older, she did a few dance moves in her videos from her One in a million” CD, but she did not really start to show us her dancing skills until the “Are you that somebody” video came out which was from the Dr. Doolittle soundtrack, and then a few years later “Try Again” the sound track to “Romeo Must Die”, then a month before her death “We need a resolution”, and after her death “More than a woman” and “Rock the boat” was released. She was a good dancer, but she was popular because of her dancing she was popular because of her soft sweet sound and her fashion style. Ciara is popular because of her dancing, so I guess that is the reason why people compare Ciara to Janet because both of them have the same style in dancing and they are popular because of their dancing. Janet even said herself a couple of years ago when she was 106 and park and one of Ciara’s videos was played, I think it was “Get Up”, she said it felt spooky for her to watch that because it felt as though she was watching herself. RIP Aaliyah.

  15. TKW says:

For my last post, I meant to says she was not popular because of her dancing.

  16. O_O says:

AALIYAH COULDN’T SING ARE YOU CRAZY AALIYAH WAS ONLY 15 AND SHE WAS SH***ING ON THOSE ARTIST IN THE 90’s LMAO GO TO YOUTUBE AND TYPE AALIYAH LIVE PERFORMANCES THERE’S A BUNCH OF THEM YOU DONT KNOW HOW FU**ING STUPID YOU SOUND RIGHT NOW && CIARA SHE ALRIGHT LOOK AT HER LIVE PERFORMANCES NOT TRYING TO DISS CIARA BUT SHE DON’T SOUND TO GOOD LIVE, AND AALIYAH IS THE R&B PRINCESS YOU JUST A HATER

  17. Angela says:

@Beelah….I know you probably wont see this but I’m curious what videos on YouTube you watched. I’ve have watched some as well. I will admit that there were some that were less than flattering, but all artists have bad moments. However, Aaliyah could definitely sing. She is one of the few artists that was not “made in a studio”. She definitely doesn’t have the range or strength of Beyonce, but she was also just starting to come into her own when she died. And I will definitely have to disagree with you on Janet having “studio vocals”. That same soft, kitten-ish whisper you hear on the CD is usually what you get from Janet live.

  18. liyahh lover says:

    @Beelah,

Aaliyah was a great singer. she had some bad performances (what artist doesn’t) But does that discredit her from ALL of the good performances she had? Look Up all of her live vocal radio a capellas, or even her performance at the Oscars. Aaliyah wasn’t a “studio” singer.

  19. Seanny says:

Who ever thinks Aaliyah couldn’t sing or hold a note is a fu**ing retard or very deaf. Aaliyah had a voice of an angel and people really took her for granted. And when she passed people really realized what they had lost. So when you think that Aaliyah’s getting props because people feel bad about her death. Remember that Michael Jackson was extremely popular but when he passed he was more popular died than he was alive. Aaliyah had a beautiful voice and she could sing without Timbaland’s tracks. She didn’t need those hard beats to get people to listen. That’s what was in at the time and Aaliyah wanted to be different she didn’t wanna be like every other artist. She wanted to have a trademark. Which was her signature hair style over her left eye. The shades. The bag clothes. That’s who she was. She was that way without the fame. So please do your research before you comment because I’m always gonna have something to say when its about Aaliyah because I’m keep her legacy alive. So if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all be that was stupid of you to not have listened to her live performances and then to comment about something as beautiful as Aaliyah’s vocal ability. And Aaliyah vocals weren’t limited. She held back. She was a shy as fu**. But she did what she had to do because it was here dream and her passion. -Seanny

Ok listen every body has there own opinion I agree with all of you but not every body love Aaliyah I mean I love her to death but ant sweat it we Noe she dope and so is Ciara like me I wear size 18 jeans but I’m 8 and I wear tight shirts because I’m different I’m unique and I love that.

  22. jas says:

wow you all mistook her post. SHE IS NOT HATING ON HER! i really loved her too. But I’m not gonna sit up here and act like she had a voice that absolutely blowed! I absolutely agree people have hyped up her talent ever since she died. I hate it when people sit up here and say sh** like she would have stepped all over Beyonce had she still been alive…. um she would have been a great competitor but blow Beyonce out of the water? I don’t think so.

  23. Rebecca says:

the fact that you posted it anonymously tells me a LOT about you. She did have a really good voice, watch her cover of ‘anything for you’. She could dance her ass off, and she was NOT overhyped because she died, her two albums went double platinum BEFORE she died and she’d been signed on to do the MATRIX, that’s huge, and that was BEFORE she died. So don’t go around saying she’s overhyped all because she died.

  24. sonny says:

omg all u people do is site a judge people it don’t matter was she look like or how she song Aaliyah was her own person i like her her music and videos so every one she sit back and let the poor girl rest in peace

  25. alonna says:

Aaliyah’s vocals were very limited. As far as her “dancing”, where’s her freestyles? All her dancing was choreographed by someone else. That’s not a true dancer right there. Dead or not, she is overrated as a vocalist and didn’t write/produce anything. Everybody did everything for her. She was a puppet.

  26. Prettywings says:

@alonna with all due respect.. Bitch shut up. There wasn’t anything remotely puppet like about Aaliyah. She made her own decisions, she did her own thing. Everything you saw from the clothes she wear to the way she carried herself was all HER. She wasn’t a creation made in a record office like a Rihanna. Furthermore, Aaliyah was a dance major in high school and she could most definitely dance. I suggest you look up Fatima. Aaliyah picked up choreography very quickly and she was very fluid and natural as a dancer. Lastly, overrated as a singer? Really? If anything she’s underrated as a singer. Because she had great style and was so damn pretty, people tend to forget the girl could actually sing. She hadn’t even hit her vocal prime yet but she still had a very beautiful voice. She was a soprano, arguably a mezzo soprano. Either way, her lower register, and head voice were gorgeous. So was her falsetto. The girl was only 22 when she died. She’d be 34 right now. Vocally her voice would have matured beautifully and she would be in her vocal prime right now. But you wouldn’t know anything about that because you don’t know anything about vocals or music. Stay in your lane. Oh and lastly, she has written songs that aren’t released. And she changed the entire sound for MTAW but didn’t take any writing credits for it because her friend came up with song. Know wtf you’re talking about or shut the heck up.

  27. Haughton 187 says:

AALIYAH WAS THE MOST PRETTIEST WOMAN HAD AN GOD GIVEN VOICE AN ANGEL LIKE PRESENCE AND IF SHE HAD LIVED TODAY A COUPLE OF ARTIST WOULD NOT BE AS BIG AS THEY ARE TODAY AALIYAH WAS AND RENAISSANCE PERFORMER SHE COULD SING ACT WRITE DANCE AND MODEL A NUMBER OF THINGS YOU’LL NEVER COMPARE TO SO JUST GO BACK IN TIME AND COP WHO REALLY TOOK OVER THE BEST RNB FEMALE ARTIST ,, B***H

  28. Brittany Mathis says:

I bet you never even took time to listen to her perform live and showcase her voice, and all you can do is spew hatred. For the longest time I thought Aaliyah wasn’t that great of a singer either, but that’s because I’d been told that. After listening to live performances and songs like I Care 4 U, my opinion changed. I get that not everyone likes an artist and feel a need to make artists that have passed seem like they weren’t as great as they really were, but you were so wrong with this one. And lastly, she was not a carbon copy of Janet, she was in her own lane due to her production team and her desire to create the newest sound.

  29. massa says:

Art helps connect people, embrace diversity, and help people express themselves. Aaliyah’s work defines why art is important because she used art to express herself, her music connects people cultures.Aaliyah was a singer, dancer, film actors and model.some of her key work are “Romeo must die,”Queen of the damned,” and the 1994 hit “age ain’t nothing but a number. She pulled off that feat without crossing over into being overly sexual. Her trendy fashion sense landed her an endorsement deal with Tommy Hilfiger. Aaliyah only released three studio albums during her life , but that was enough to leave a mark on the game that almost every R&B singer to come after his or her drew inspiration from the starlet. Aaliyah was an artist for eight years. thankfully her multi-platinum selling albums Age Ain’t nothing but a number and the self-titled Aaliyah, as well as soundtrack “Are you that somebody, I don’t wanna, Try Again ,and the Oscar -nominated “Journey to the past.” She inspired people to express himself and be who they are. Aaliyah Dana Haughton was born on January 16,1979 in Brooklyn,New York. But raised in Detroit with her parents Michael and Diane Haughton and older brother Rashad Haughton. She started voice lessons shortly after she learned to talk. She graduated from Detroit high school for fine and performing arts,in 1997 with a 4.0 GPA.
At age nine she made an unsuccessful bid on the televised contest “star search.”The loss didn’t break her stride.but she gained much-needed experience working in front of a large audience. Aaliyah recalled her TV debut: “It was really, really cute. I sang ‘My Funny Valentine,’ and I had on a white dress my grandmother made with a little bolero jacket, and special curls in my hair.” That experience came in handy a couple of years later at age 11 she was signed to perform for a week in Las Vegas with her aunt Gladys Knight. At the age of 14, Aaliyah signed her first record contract when her uncle Barry Hankerson founded his own recording company, Blackground Enterprises. He introduce her to 27 years old R&B singer R. Kelly. After being introduced to R.Kelly he started writing and producing most of the 15 years old songs on her album “Age Ain’t Nothing but a number” which released in 1994 She went on a world tour before returning to complete her education.During this time her relationship with R Kelly grow some sources claimed that that they had married despite her age but the marriage was reportedly annulled.
In the 17 year old singer came back and released her sophomore album,”One in a million.Helmed by the well-known pop producer Timbaland and featuring rap performer Missy Elliott. The album garnered favorable reviews and sold two million copies. Over the next year Aaliyah kept herself in the public consciousness with her soundtrack for the animated film “Anastasia “and the Eddie Murphy Vehicle “Doctor Dolittle.Joel Silver enlisted her as one of the lead actors in the action film “Romeo must die co-starring Jet Li.The film was a box office success and had led to Aaliyah’s hit record “Try again.” The soundtracks sold millions of copies and spent weeks atop the billboard soundtrack charts. The popularity of the film later brought her a role in the movie “Queen of the Damned. Aaliyah played the title role of Akass in the supernatural adventure based on the third novel in the Anne Rice’s vampire chronicles. She won 32 awards in all in 2002 she was Nominated five for five different awards and she won all five.
There was no changes in her art because she die so young. On 25 of August 2001 Aaliyah died on a plane crashed from the Bahamas where she went to shoot music video for rock the boat. Aaliyah continue to have an impact on the world she was a person of virtue, honor, hard work and love.she was a unique individual with a gate since of style. We strive to the best and make our world a better place with Aaliyah in our hearts.
    Impact and Influences
13 years after the untimely death of Aaliyah her imprint hasn’t wanted despite resting on a small back catalog that never had a chance develop. Its more than a decade since the R&B icon died in a plane crash. She was influenced by Mary J Blige, Mariah Carey, Marvin Gays, Salt -N- Pepa, Whitney Houston and more. Aaliyah become an artist with help of R Kelly and strengthened by longtime collaborators Missy Elliot and Timbaland, both defined and reinvented the sound of the 90’s urban music.Aaliyah was exposed to her influences when her uncle marry his wife(Gladys Knight).Aaliyah inspired a lot of female artist like Zendaya, Teyana Taylor, Sevyn Streeter and Ciara with her slinky dance move, and her innovative beats that flirted with a number of genres. In 2001, you could find a 15-year-old (Sevyn Streeter) doing her best Aaliyah impression. She (Sevyn Streeter) and her cousin would glide from side to side, emulating the R&B’s icon’s choreography. Aaliyah learn a lot from R Kelly and her aunt Gladys Knight. There was a lot of artist make the similar music but the one the stands out to me is the all girls group (Destiny’s Child) with Beyonce, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams. Aaliyah fit in the 70’s because of her style and what she brought to the table as a artist. She helped create a union between Hip hop and R&B it was understandable why she was referred to as “The princess of Hip hop and R&B.” Her second album “ one in a million” hit the musical scene like an atom bomb.

    END of the writing
Age Anit Nothing But a Number was the most important album for Aaliyah because that was the album that bow up her career. She created this album early in her career

  31. Shani Dayo says:

Aaliyah had a pretty voice, but I have watched some of her videos and haven’t seen her dance to much. I love some of her songs, but I think people get to upset when someone says they don’t like her style, people can have their opinions.

  32. Geena says:

She couldn’t sing? Have you seen her acapella Star Spangled Banner performance when she was just 16 years old?

  33. Nyeshathomas says:

Aaliyah had a wonderful voice. She was One of The Best R&B Singers of the 90’s and Early 2000’s.Fuck Beyonce. She’s too overrated. Ciara tries to be Like Aaliyah. But A aliyah’s voice is One In A Million. I’m Pretty sure if She Couldn’t sing she wouldn’t Be the princess of R&B.If she was still alive she would still be relevant today. Same Goes For Left Eye(Lisa Lopes). She had some Bad Performances but Nobodys perfect.
