Ashanti opened up about the controversy surrounding the Lady of Soul Aretha Franklin Entertainer of the Year Award to Access Hollywood’s Shaun Robinson on Friday. Asked how she reacted when she found out about the petition, Ashanti said, “I’m like, ‘wow,’ you know, I felt this bad feeling… It hurt.” As for the petition’s claim that “it is an insult to other entertainers who are more deserving,” citing Faith Evans, Alicia Keys, India.Arie and the late Aaliyah as better candidates, Ashanti added, “And I’m like, ‘that’s not a good thing, I’m really a kind person, I don’t attack people.'” Ashanti wants to take the setback and make it into a positive saying, “I honestly felt kind of motivated, it was ammunition, like, you know what, we gotta knock all of these non-believers out. It honestly just gave me the ooompphhh, like, ‘Oh, I’m gonna kill it!'”. Ashanti will accepted award live Saturday on Soul Train’s Lady of Soul Awards.
