Could Ruben Studdard Be The Next Luther Vandross?
Although its official release isn’t until Tuesday, ‘American Idol’ champ Ruben Studdard’s ‘Superstar’ is already being played on radio and doing as well as the new Luther Vandross’ new single, according to program director Jamillah Muhammad. But she draws a distinction between the two men. “Luther is in a category all by himself,” Muhammad tells the Detroit News. “But Ruben has done justice to his career with the whole ‘American Idol’ thing, and that single does not hurt him at all.” Many agree; among them Erik Parker, music editor of Vibe Magazine. “Ruben is a natural successor to Luther Vandross,” says Parker. “Ruben has such a big voice … Unless he has horrible writers, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t have as long a career as Luther.”
