Richard Abowitz of Las Vegas Weekly spoke with Gladys Knight for her thoughts on the tragic death of Aaliyah and her relationship with the singer/actress. Knight said, “She knew already she wanted to be a contemporary artist. But what I was trying to give her was the foundation, because when you just go for whatever the fad is at the time, it limits your longevity. What the greats in the business–Frank, Sammy, Ella, and look at someone like B.B. King who is still around–taught me was to do contemporary things but not fad things. That was what they taught us and that was what I was trying to give Aaliyah. That’s the best thing I can give you. So you can be around for awhile.”
