‘Feminist’ is a label Kelis is quick to disclaim. “If a guy did a song that’s like, proud to be a guy, no one calls him a chauvinist,” the ‘Milkshake’ singer tells Australia’s Time Off magazine. “As soon as a woman does it about being happy about being a female, it’s like all of a sudden she’s a feminist. I don’t think that’s accurate. I don’t think people know what the word feminist means. I think it’s used improperly and I don’t think I’m a feminist anyway. Am I proud to be a woman? Absolutely. I love being a female and I love all the things that come with it. I support women and the work that they do in the arts, in business, whatever. And I don’t think that makes me a feminist – it just makes me a woman. I’m a woman and I’m proud to be one.”
