When Mandisa was asked about comparisons between her and Ruben Studdard, the singer touched on how plus size women are viewed differently than plus size men. “Well, I love Ruben so I will take it,” she said in a teleconference with reporters. “But I think there’s a little bit of a double standard when it comes to plus size males and females. I think males are a little bit more accepted than females are. And I am so glad that I was able to get this far and I just feel like America is able to embrace a woman that’s a plus size, just as much as a man can be called a velvet teddy bear. I think America can say that a woman can be as well.” Mandisa also added, “Well, I just think that women so often in media, we just see lots of different images for how we’re supposed to look. And you don’t see it quite as much with men. And I think that that’s got a lot to do with it.”
