Michael Kiwanuka spoke with the Evening Herald about how his first listen of an outtake of ‘(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay’ by Otis Redding was a life-changing moment for him, beginning the Londoner’s love of soul music. But the 24-year-old got sidetracked by getting involved with rock bands and with British rapper Chipmunk. “I wasn’t really that comfortable,” Kiwanuka said about briefly being a session guitarist for Chipmunk. “I just had to do it. As a session guy, you wait for a gig and if it comes, you just kind of take it, and I wasn’t as prolific or successful enough to be able to pick my own gigs. But it was a million miles away from what I wanted to do. I just tried to get the job done.” Read more.
