Ruben Studdard broke the ‘American Idol’ mold recording his debut album ‘Soulful’, bypassing pop and concentrating on his strength — R&B. “Even during the show people could absolutely see that I wasn’t a pop artist,” Studdard told Gary Graff of The Cleveland Plain Dealer. “For me to do a straight-ahead pop record would be a stretch. It wouldn’t be believable. The record label understood that, and we came together and made the decision that of course we should do an album that’s strongly based with an R&B flavor.”
